Citizen Science, the recruitment of volunteers to make scientific observations, provide analyses or samples, has gained significant interest in the past 5 years. Here, I will provide an overview on the development of the World’s first soil sampling and microbiome analysis CS project: Microblitz. Initiated  in 2012, Microblitz has recruited over 1,000 Citizen Scientists and sampled soils all over the state of WA. I’ll discuss some of the key requirements of a successful CS initiative, some of the failures and the way in which we are adopting and modifying CS project architectures to tackle global issues in the coming decades.
