Juliana Mendes Monteiro Australian Microbial Ecology 2019

Juliana Mendes Monteiro

I am a final year PhD student in the School of Agriculture and Environment at The Univeristy of Western Australia. The aim of my research is to investigate and understand the role of the microbial mat microorganisms in mineral precipitation and microbialites formation. To achieve these aims microbial communities from lithifying and non-lithifying microbial mats and their functional capability have been characterised using metagenomics. The data obtained from my research will be beneficial not only from a basic science standpoint of improving our understanding on the origin of microbial mats and the mechanisms by which they for microbialites, but will also provide key insights to better inform and guide future environmental management programs addressed to microbialites conservation.
